Strep Throat Testing

Strep throat is an infection in the throat and tonsils caused by the streptococcal bacteria. Symptoms of strep include a sudden, severe sore throat, fever greater than 101 degrees, pain with swallowing, swollen tonsils and lymph nodes, and white spots at the back of a bright red throat. If you have other symptoms of a cold, like a runny nose and a cough, your sore throat is likely a viral infection rather than strep. Strep throat is highly contagious and is spread through airborne droplets or by picking up the bacteria from contaminated surfaces. Strep throat is treated with antibiotics. By itself, strep is not serious but, if left unchecked, can lead to serious complications such as scarlet fever, kidney infections, and rheumatic fever.

Brentview Medical Urgent Care Clinics in West Hollywood and Brentwood are equipped with Rapid Strep Throat Testing to let you know within minutes if you have strep throat. Brentview Medical physicians do this rapid strep throat test on anyone suspected of having strep throat. Within 2 minutes of swabbing the tonsils, the test shows whether the patient is having a strep throat infection. If strep throat is suspected or confirmed, our physicians may also decide to send off further testing including a throat culture/sensitivity and blood work. Strep throat is a serious infection and antibiotics must be taken as soon as possible since untreated strep throat can leave the patient with long term problems. For this reason, if you are feeling unwell and have a throat ache that has lasted more than a couple days, come to our urgent care center to get evaluated.
